AlgaeCytes is focused on developing and commercialising the next generation of bioactive ingredients from sustainable and environmentally-sound resources. AlgaeCytes uses its unique algae technology in an integrated biorefining process to produce high-value algae-based products, in particular Omega-3 oils, polysaccharides and proteins, for the food, cosmetic and the pharmaceutical market.

Job Description

The role will be based in our laboratories/offices/production facilities (rather than from home) with occasional short-term business travel, as part of our chemistry team working on the downstream processing of algal biomass as well as to lead ongoing R&D and continuous improvement projects within the organisation. Central to the role are the optimisation of pilot extraction processes, the quality control of the products, and the scale-up of processes as well as supporting the required elements for commercialisation. In addition, you will be working alongside and supporting the Senior NPD and Regulatory Chemist for new product development and regulatory approval projects.

Main duties and responsibilities:

• Leading the internal, external, R&D and continuous improvement projects and how they affect the company’s business and products.
• Leading a team on laboratory to pilot plant-scale to commercial scale to dewater, extract and refine products of interest from microalgae.
• Developing laboratory and scale-up methods for extracting and refining natural oils and other bioactive ingredients.
• Developing methodology and identifying and characterising bioactive ingredients using analytical techniques such as GC-FID, HPLC and others.
• Supporting the business requirements for product development including formulation of new products and ensuring necessary regulatory and safety documentation meets required standard.
• Consistently demonstrating initiative in implementing project work and effectively designing, problem solving and conducting experiments.
• Clear and timely communication of data.
• Analysing and interpreting experimental data, then making appropriate recommendations.
• Managing effectively in a multidisciplinary team to formulate and execute project research plans.
• Working independently and flexibly to meet changing demands.
• Presenting data-supporting conclusions both in written and oral reports on project progress.
• Line managing (where appropriate) junior members of staff to consistently deliver requirements for the company.
• Ensuring that all company policies and safety practices are followed.

Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate requires a BSc/MSc/PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or similar field with skills in food science, biological, organic and/or analytical chemistry. Preferably 5+ years relevant industry experience. Valuable skills also include working with developing food products from concept to launch. Skills which may prove useful include working with microalgae and/or plants and the extraction and refinement of natural products as well as working with nutritional or pharmaceutical products. Must be able to work independently and flexibly and to adapt to changing priorities. Line management experience would be preferable but not necessarily compulsory. English language skills are preferred.
