At the center of AlgaeCytes’ cultivation process is our advanced photobioreactor system. Algae are grown in rows of enclosed glass tubing, and LED lighting is used to stimulate photosynthesis. Our patented process optimizes the photosynthetic process, allowing microalgae to flourish and produce valuable compounds. our system enables us to regulate light, nutrient supply, and temperature for efficient and consistent production year-round.  Our algae grow 24/7, regardless of outside weather conditions.

Where We Grow

AlgaeCytes was established in 2010 with the goal of innovating high-quality ingredients from microorganisms, sustainably and at scale. Our headquarters is located at Discovery Park in Sandwich, Kent, UK, one of the leading science and technology parks in the UK. This strategic location provides our R&D team with access to a vibrant community of researchers and innovators, as well as state-of-the-art facilities. Our R&D team has spent several years operating a pilot facility, optimizing the production of our lead product. We are now well-positioned for commercial expansion and are excited to bring our products to market.

Dessau, Germany was chosen as the location for our first commercial-scale plant. The region of Saxony-Anhalt is a leading region for biotechnology in Germany, with a strong commitment to sustainability and innovation. It is also home to a number of world-renowned research institutions, including the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and its Competence Center Algal Biotechnology. The plant will be located in an ideal environment for sustainable, energy-efficient operations, with renewable energy via rooftop and other solar, water recycling, and other features.

Advantages of Controlled Environment Agriculture

Our enclosed facility allows us to cultivate algae throughout the year, free from the influence of external factors like weather conditions or  the uncertainty of extreme weather events. AlgaeCytes’ controlled environment ensures optimal temperature, humidity, and lighting conditions. This consistency guarantees a reliable supply of premium ingredients for our customers.

Our closed-system approach safeguards against contamination risks and ensures the integrity of our products. Our cultivation process does not require pesticides. It also protects against contaminants such as heavy metals or chemicals, such as PCBs, which can be found in conventional sources of Omega-3 like fish oil.  By conducting our production in an enclosed environment, we do not have to contend with external pollutants from the air or water, such as pollutants carried by wind or water runoff, which can otherwise introduce unwanted substances into the algae culture.

Algaecytes maintains full traceability of our products from seed to sale. By producing algae in an enclosed environment, we can have control and transparency at every stage of the production process and ensure the safety and purity of our ingredients. Our closed-loop system allows us to tightly control the variables that can affect the growth and quality of the algae. Our enclosed manufacturing process gives us a distinct advantage over alternative cultivation methods in ensuring the integrity of our product. Open-air approaches are more vulnerable to contamination by external factors, such as airborne pollutants and waterborne elements, and have more limited ability to collect data on their crops. Our closed-loop system allows us to tightly control the variables that can affect the growth and quality of the algae. By using our precision traceability and quality control procedures, we can fulfill our commitment to deliver our customers the highest quality product.

Algae are a nutritious, versatile, and sustainable ingredient source that offers several advantages over conventional ingredient sources. One of their most notable advantages is their rapid growth, which allows them to be cultivated with a much shorter lead time than other ingredient sources, such as fish and plants. Algae can be produced in just weeks, while fish can take up to a year and plants can take several months. Additionally, Iingredient sources like fish and plants have a longer downtime due to seasonal availability and field rotation. Algae, on the other hand, can be grown year-round, regardless of the season. This makes algae a more attractive option for businesses that need to produce ingredients quickly and efficiently.

Our production process is well-positioned to leverage algae's fast-growing nature and maximize our manufacturing capacity. Our photobioreactors are modular, which means they can be easily scaled up or down and quickly repurposed to grow different strains. This manufacturing flexibility allows us to efficiently allocate resources and adjust our production outputs in response to the needs of our customers. We can easily adjust the environmental conditions in our photobioreactors to optimize the growth of algae, giving us the ability to produce a variety of different types of algae products that can be tailored to the specific needs of our customers.
