Microalgae Production Scientist

AlgaeCytes is focused on developing and commercialising the next generation of bioactive ingredients from sustainable and environmentally-sound resources. AlgaeCytes uses its unique algae technology in an integrated biorefining process to produce high-value algae-based products, in particular Omega-3 oils, polysaccharides and proteins, for the food, cosmetic and the pharmaceutical market.

Job Description:
Reporting to the Project Operations Manager we are seeking a Microalgae Production Scientist. The role will be based in our laboratories/offices/production facilities (rather than from home) with occasional short-term business travel. You will be responsible for the maintenance and growth of our algal cultures from seed stock to large scale photobioreactor production through to harvest. You will also be assisting the R & D team developing and implementing the company’s research programme together with various external collaborative projects. The role will be based in our laboratories/offices/production facilities.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Supervising the preparation and maintenance of microalgal cultures for scale-up, up to pilot scale photobioreactors.
  • The optimisation of the heterotrophic/mixotrophic cultivation of microalgae.
  • Identifying and characterising potential products or bioactive ingredients of interest.
  • Planning and execution of the companies’ R&D roadmap leading to the optimisation of our microalgae strains.
  • Developing an understanding of the company’s internal and external projects and how they affect the company’s business and products.
  • Working closely with the AlgaeCytes Senior Management Team on a day-to-day basis on strategic planning to facilitate the completion of the companies’ commercial goals.
  • Providing troubleshooting and supervision to junior scientists.
  • Analysing and interpreting experimental data, then making appropriate recommendations.
  • Presenting data-supported conclusions in written and oral reports on progress.
  • Development, optimisation and implementation of the Laboratory Quality Management procedures.
  • Ensuring that all company policies and safety practices are followed.

Skills and Qualifications

  • BSc/MSc in Biotechnology, Microbiology or equivalent with a minimum of 5 years scientific lab experience.
  • Technical knowledge/expertise in the following areas: algae biology, algae cultivation and biotechnology.
  • Strong communication/presentation skills including sharing scientific data with non-scientists.
  • Good IT skills – in particular Excel, Word, Project and Powerpoint.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise.
  • Must be able to work independently and flexibly and to adapt to changing priorities.
  • English language skills are preferred.
